Top Junior Hockey Prospect Shaun Houk Named to USPHL South Region All-Star Team
USPHL coaches narrowed down the field of junior hockey defensemen from over 20 teams in the USPHL Elite Division to the best 14 D-men, tallied from the votes of current USPHL junior hockey coaches of the same teams. Current scouts and coaches for the Tier 2 Junior and NCAA college programs often find their recruits from the Tier 3 junior leagues as players at this level prove themselves and stand out.
USPHL league officials had this to say about the announcement: “The USPHL Elite South Region, consisting of the Southeast and Florida Divisions, is pleased to announce its 2018-19 season All-Star Selections, voted on by the coaches of the two divisions. Coaches could not vote for their own players on the ballots. The South Region named one Elite All-Star team of 12 forwards, 7 defensemen and 3 goalies.”
Among the seven highest ranked South Region USPHL Elite defensemen were:
- Shaun Houk – (‘02/Tampa, Fla.) – Carolina Eagles – The youngest Elite All-Star, Houk made the move from the Eagles’ 16U squad to the Elite team this year and played extremely well against players up to four years older than him throughout the year. He posted three goals and 20 assists for 23 points in 43 games. Houk certainly has a bright future ahead of him.
Alex Walsh (‘00/Parker, Colo.) – Richmond Generals – Walsh was the leading scorer among Generals defensemen with his six goals and 26 assists for 32 points, which also put him in the top 10 league-wide among blueliners. His 11 power play assists were tied for second among defensemen in the league with two others. He also helped the Generals to the second lowest goals against in the league (89).
- Andrew Lawrence – (‘01/Toronto, Ont.) – Atlanta Jr. Kings – Lawrence was tops in assists among all USPHL Elite defensemen with 34. Combined with his 11 goals, he scored 45 points, which tied him for the team lead in points on the Kings. Lawrence was also one of the league leaders in shorthanded assists with three.
